Upload a judgment

This guides an editor on how to upload new judgments on LII sites.

  1. MS Word files:

    1. open file and hold down <Fn><Alt><F11> on keyboard [or <Fn><F11>]

    2. Visual Basic window pops up

    3. type ActiveDocument.ConvertNumbersToText in text box at bottom of window

    4. press Enter

    5. Save file immediately

  2. PDF files:

    1. open file and click on All tools – menu opens

    2. click Scan & OCR

    3. click on In this file

    4. click Recognize text

    5. Save file

On the admin page dashboard (LII url/admin/), scroll to judgments from the list of menu items. Click the green Add button to begin.

The Add judgment page will load. Attach the judgment file (attach PDF only if MS Word file not available). The Upload Tool will extract metadata and populate the required fields. The fields with * are compulsory fields and must be populated.

  1. Review the Key details tab:

    1. Jurisdiction = Country in which Order of court applies

    2. Locality = Organ under which Court operates (AfricanLII uploads only)

    3. Court = Court handing down judgment

    4. Registry = Seat of Court's Registry (if specified in judgment)

    5. Case name = Applicant/Appellant v Respondent (refer to guide on case naming)

    6. Date = Judgment date

    7. Language = Language that the judgment is written in

    8. Published = box must be ticked so judgment appears on site

    9. Hearing date = Date of hearing or last day of proceedings

    10. Must be anonymised = box must be ticked so judgment is not visible on site until anonymisation process completed

    11. Anonymised = box must be ticked ONLY after anonymisation process completed

    12. Case action = main issue/legal basis for proceedings

    13. Outcomes = order of court

    14. Serial number override = insert number ONLY if court provides neutral citation in judgment

  2. Review the Case numbers tab:

    1. Year = Year of case number

    2. Full case number as printed on judgment = Case number to be copied and pasted as per judgment

  3. Review the key details tab:

    1. Jurisdiction = Country in which Order of court applies

  4. Under judges, enter the name of the judge on the Judgment. For cases with multiple judgments, list the judges in the order they should appear when the judgment is on the site.

  5. Click save and continue editing.

  1. Under case numbers, enter the case number from the judgment in the string override field. Separate the matter type, number and year in the respective fields.

  1. Click Save and your judgment will be successfully uploaded.

  2. Click view on site to view the judgment on the site.

  3. To make edits to the judgment you have uploaded, click view on site, on top left hand corner of the judgment, Click the edit button.

  1. Make the necessary changes and click save again.
